Carabao Cup: Nunez wasteful as Manchester City knock out Liverpool

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez would regret the three vital chances he squandered after his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.

Manchester City took the lead in the 10th with Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland putting the Pep Guardiola-led side ahead after Kevin De Bruyne’s delightful cross.

Liverpool, who won the cup last season, were back in it through Fabio Carvalho, who struck home from James Milner’s cross in the 20th minute after Joel Matip found the veteran with a pass in the City area.

The second half started with drama as both sides scored with their first attack. Riyad Mahrez scored his first goal against Liverpool in the 47th minute before Mohamed Salah put Jurgen Klopp’s men back in it in the 48th minute.

The match looked balanced as either side looked likely to score the next goal.

However, it was City’s Nathan Ake that scored in the 58th minute after another delightful ball by De Bruyne found the Dutch defender, who headed past Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal.

Nunez could have levelled for the Reds but the Uruguayan drove his attempt wide of Stefan Ortega’s post.

The match ended with City maintaining their lead and dumping Liverpool out of the league cup.
