The Medical Women Association of Nigeria Holds The Nigeria Women & Health Care Symposium 2019

  The umbrella body of the female doctors in Nigeria under the auspices of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria in collaboration with prompt Home Health and Healthcare Business Support Systems Ltd. on the 14the May, 2019 gathered Nigerians in furtherance to ethos universal health coverage in the country. The epoch medical symposium organised by MWAN under the leadership of Dr. Joyce Barber as president have representatives across the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory as well as policy makers, professionas from other profession, NGOs and the media. The symposium features presentation of papers on Introduction to Universal Health Coverage by Dr. Ogeoma Ukeke, Role of Women in Universal Health Coverage, The Bayelsa Experience by Prof. Onyaye Edgar Kunle-Olowu, panel session and climaxes with presentation of awards to eminent Nigerians. The president of MWAN, Dr. Joyce Barber in an interaction with journalists says significantly, women should be allowed and given the opportunity to drive and advocate for the universal health coverage which she believes will advance increment in the country universal health coverage if done. Though, there hasn’t been any official publication on the statistics or figure of Universal Health Coverage in the country but fact has it that is between 3.5 to 4 % which is low; she said. It is believed that if women are given the pride of place in the policy formulation and implementation of universal health coverage being them as the most affected gender of the health related hazard and as policy maker in their home will be able to convince their husband and children on the scheme and ensure no one is left behind in the quest making affordable and equality healthcare accessible to all. Why asked on the National Health Insurance Scheme, she says the scheme is a good national health policy but however make a case for proper implementation in fulfilling it’s mandate of addressing access to quality health services and delivery. Dr. Barber who further identified funding, education and infrastructure as the fundamental challenges inhabiting healthcare services delivery said adequate funding must be made available, the people properly educated on the need to live a healthy and hygienic lifestyle and tasked government, the private sector, NGOs and corporate bodies to help provide infrastructures that will make quality and affordable healthcare available to all. On funding while responding to question from journalist, she says that she is optimistic that the health fund will further enhance the funding of health service delivery and charged all Nigerians to buy into ongoing advocacy for universal health coverage in the country. The president of Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Francis A. Faduyile in address appreciated the WMAN for holding the symposium and assured Nigerians of access to affordable and quality health care.
