You caused them bad luck: Netizens blame Buhari for Morocco’s loss to France

On social media, some Nigerians blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for Morocco’s defeat at the current World Cup in Qatar.

In the current tournament’s semifinal, France defeated Morocco 2-0. Many Internet users had predicted the African nation to defeat the French team before the game.

Sports are a great passion for President Buhari. This is why he is constantly keeping an eye on and congratulating successful sports teams. The President is rumored to be an Arsenal supporter.

The benefit of having Buhari on your side is undeniable; however, if you subscribe to superstition—like many others who dislike the president—it can wind up being more of a “Just Dey Play” scenario than a “Buga” one.

Over time, there has been a jocular reference to what Netizens refer to as the “Buhari Curse”, which state that when the President supports any sports team, they’ll end up losing.

The Buhari curse has followed Nigeria’s President ever since he called the Super Eagles to wish them success, and they were beaten; tons of people are still joking about it.

Earlier this week, President Buhari tweeted, wishing the Morocco team success:

In his tweet, he said:

“Congratulations to the Atlas Lions, and to King Mohammed VI and the people of Morocco, on the historic feat of becoming the first African country to win a semi final place at the World Cup. Morocco has made the entire continent proud; we are all rooting for their success.”

However, Morocco, which put up the best performance in their group stage, suffered its first loss on Wednesday.

What is the “Buhari Curse”?

It has been observed that whenever the President picks a team or congratulates someone, the team or the person ends up experiencing some bad luck.

Following this turn of superstitions, many citizens have taken to social media to urge athletes not to meet the president.

The Buhari curse didn’t just affect football players; quite a number of athletes also suffered losses.

Immediately being photographed bowing to Mr Buhari, Anthony Joshua was affected by this curse, likewise fighter Kamaru Usman.

Reacting, some Netizens on social media said the president ought not to have wished the Morocco team success.
