The mouse and keyboard versus controller debate for FPS titles has been going on for years, with newer FPS titles granting controller players greater aim assist. However, it seems that Steam Controller configurations give controller players another foothold in Apex Legends.
By binding keystrokes to your controller with Steam Controller configurations, you can map the WASD movement keys to a controller. While this may seem insignificant given that controller players can move around just fine without it, being able to map these buttons to a controller offers much easier access to tapping penalty on a controller.

While this trend is unlikely to become common among controller players due to the haphazard nature of setup, it does add to the ongoing debate about how best to balance controllers against the traditional mouse and keyboard. Historically, mouse and keyboard players have had a huge advantage when playing against controller players due to the precise and fast tracking of the mouse.
However, the developers have recently added much greater aim assist to their FPS games, which attempts to put controller players on a more even playing field. However, that balance is difficult, and it has been nearly impossible for the FPS community to find a balance where controller players stand a chance without receiving major benefits. As these two control schemes continue to generate controversy as players choose sides, more and more of these niche edge cases will unfold.
